In Christ

Have you ever sat and thought about what exactly the words “in Christ” entail? As I’ve studied on this, I found some “treasures” that I wanted to share with you.

Oddly enough, “in Christ” is really not a common phrase in our everyday Christian lingo. As a matter of fact, you may be wondering what does that even mean? One example that I found to help explain it stated this: “If you ask a man, “are you in business?” the man knows exactly what you mean. If you ask a young person, “are you in love?”, they understand exactly what you are asking, but if you ask a person if they are “in Christ” they often are confused by your question.

However, you can find this phrase repeat over and over throughout the New Testament. It seems that Paul was very fond of this phrase! As a matter of fact, if you counted up all of the times you see “in Christ”, or “in Him” (or the like) there are over 100.

In Him – Speaks of our union with Christ through His shed blood for the remission of our sins, and if we accept this gift of salvation through faith, we are then seen by God as righteous because we are in Christ. Once in Christ, this is an eternal unbreakable covenant union that cannot be lost or changed. (Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. )
Is there a safer place on Earth that you can be found? I submit to you the answer is a resounding “no”. You can find no greater love, no greater protection, no greater peace than when you are abiding “in Christ”. Paul put it this way in Philippians 1:21, he said, “for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” and he echoes this again in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me”. I think our treasure question for today then becomes, how does my everyday life display that I am “in Christ”? or does it at all? am I lacking? Can others tell that I am “in Christ”, just as they could easily see that I am “in love”, or “in a certain profession”, or “in a particular business”?
After you’ve had some time to ponder and pray through those questions, consider taking some time to review these verses below. By no means is this an exhaustive list, but it’s a great start as to what we have, how we can live, and what are we are “in Christ”.
